The Manitoba Marathon has many hard working and talented runners that participate. Here are some of our Elite Athlete’s short biographies! Be sure to watch out for them at the 2015 Manitoba Marathon finish line and cheer them on!
Dr. Reesa Simmonds
It is with joy and pride that I run the Manitoba Marathon each year. The friendly and familiar faces en route make it my favourite event despite having marathoned extensively elsewhere. I train rather informally and unconventionally in that almost all of my training is done in the course of a daily commute to work as well as ‘running errands’. I also spend significant time working in northern Manitoba emergency rooms, which is challenging given the longer duration spent contending with winter conditions. In previous years, I have placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the Manitoba Marathon so I’m highly anticipating the experience of one day being the first to cross that finish line!

My name is Cathy Cullen. I was born and raised in Winnipeg, MB. DOB – 08/08/80. Running has been a huge part of my life and is something I’ve always had a passion for. I ran track and x-country in high school as well as for the U of Manitoba. Needed a new goal to tackle and began competing in full marathons after I graduated. I am currently an elementary PE teacher in the Winnipeg School Division and hope that I can send a message to my students that with some passion and a hard work ethic, they can reach whatever goals they set for themselves. I have 2 amazing kids at home (Shelby – almost 4 and Tyler – 1.5). I loved the challenge of getting back into shape after having my kids and achieved a goal I set for myself of winning the Las Vegas full marathon before my mat leave ended with my son. I am now enjoying running for fun and spending lots of quality time with my family. Along with my husband, we will all participate in the Manitoba Marathon Super Run this year 🙂 I really only like to compete when I feel I’m at the top of my game, so when you see me toe the line for the Manitoba Half or Full Marathon again, know that I’ll be there to compete! 🙂

For me, running is a stress reliever and it’s fun. Running long distance feels like there are no limits to how fast or how far you can go. You choose it all and most of all it is not repetitive. I don’t think I’ve made any huge accomplishment just yet, but what I am most happy about is winning the Intrepid Dezine Half Marathon here in 2014 with a 1:09.32. My Mentors are all the coaches, all the alumni from track that I have met over the years, and especially all my friends and teammates around me that I learn from every day.
