RACE WEEKEND FOR EVERYONE
The Manitoba Marathon values inclusivity. Goals are individual, just like the people going after them, and we are here to help you reach yours. If you are not represented here, reach out to us and we will do our best to make any reasonable accommodations.
ADAPTIVE DEVICES PERMITTED ON COURSE
- Recreational and sport wheelchair
- Push-rim wheelchair
- Handcycles (allowed on all courses but not eligible for awards)
If you would like to use an adaptive device not listed above, please contact running@manitobamarathon.mb.ca
PARKING & STAGING
A limited number of accessible parking spaces are available in U Lot. They will be issued to participants with valid handicap parking pass.
Drop off/staging area for adaptive athletes is located at the south side of Chancellor Matheson and Kenny Ploen Way. Athletes will be issued a pass and ingress via Research Road. Volunteers will be available at the staging location to assist with unloading of equipment. Note that this area is very busy on race morning – plan to arrive at least an hour before your event to allow sufficient time to prepare
PICKUP
Post-event, athletes can be picked up at the same staging location on the south side of Chancellor Matheson and Kenny Ploen Way. If the roads have not re-opened from the start line tear down, the same access pass can be used to enter via Pembina and Chancellor Matheson and proceed up Research Road.
BAG CHECK
Bag check is available for all athletes starting at 6:00 AM on race day in the Pinnacle Suite. Athletes can access the suite either via the ramp on the east side of Princess Auto Stadium, or through the main entrance at Gate 2 (also ramp accessible). Adaptive athletes are exempt from bag size restrictions for Bag Check and may check any equipment required pre or post race.
PRE-RACE AND START LINE
Participants should transfer from their day chair prior to arriving at the start line. If you require space to store your day chair, please contact kirsten@manitobamarathon.mb.ca at least two weeks in advance of the event.
5K & 10K
5K participants using an accessible device are encouraged to start in their assigned corral, or at the back of the corrals as you feel most comfortable.
Full & Half Marathon
A designated start time for “fast adaptive racers” is available to the following participants:
- 21K with finish time of less than 1:45
- 42K with finish time of less than 3:15
If you wish to request to be included in the early start, please reach out to kirsten@manitobamarathon.mb.ca at least two weeks prior to the race.
ON COURSE
A map of all courses highlighting information pertinent to adaptive athletes can be found HERE. Map outlines accessible porta-potties on course, tight turn radius locations and changes of terrain of note. Please note, all courses are subject to change based on City approval. There may be sections of the course that travel through on-going construction, we will do our best to work with the City of Winnipeg to ensure these areas are as smooth as possible.
FINISH LINE
The finish line for all events is located on turf level at Princess Auto Stadium. When entering the finish area via Bohemier Trail, you will be directed into the accessible lane for your finish. This lane loops around to the loading dock which is the entrance to the field: please note that the pitch of this section is the steepest you will encounter on course. A lane of rubber matting will be your transition onto the field through to the finish line.
Directly after the finish line, participants will receive their medals and can access water and electrolytes.
Participants can take their time on the turf level to take finish line photos with their medals: the apron around the turf is concrete and allows for travel around the full field.
Once you are ready to proceed up to recovery on the concourse, a finish line volunteer will escort you to the elevator located at the north end of the field. This is a freight elevator and has enough room to accommodate a hand cycle. Once on the concourse level, the volunteer will take you to the recovery area for post race refreshments.
ACCESSIBLE SEATING
Accessible seating is located all around the concourse level in the viewing box areas. We would welcome you to locate yourself anywhere on the concourse that you are comfortable.
If you have any further questions about accessibility, please contact Kirsten Parker at kirsten@manitobamarathon.mb.ca
