The Manitoba Marathon has a long-standing commitment to ensuring that our events are environmentally responsible. The Marathon sets an annual goal of 85% waste diversion, which means that only 15% of our generated waste ends up in a landfill (with the rest going to compost and recycling facilities).
Our goal for 2025 is to communicate with participants and volunteers about how we do our work so that you can better assist us on race weekend to reach our goal. We look forward to sharing stories of successes with you throughout the new year: watch for this logo to see how you can help make it all happen!
Here are a few of the ways that you can help us to keep our event and our city sustainable for generations to come:
- At the start and finish line of the race, watch for our sustainability team volunteers located at waste pods: with three sorting bins (recycling, compost and landfill), please put waste in the correct bin with the help of a happy volunteer.
- On the course, our water and Nuun cups are fully compostable! Ensure you dispose of them close to the water station so our amazing volunteers can sort and bag them for processing post race
- Did you know we offer a Green Bib program for the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Full Marathon? Reduce your impact by opting out of a shirt and medal with a portion of your proceeds being donated to an environmental charity
- All leftover food from the recovery area on Marathon day is donated to local food charities and schools. You can help us by taking only what you need to refuel after the race
- Our race is free of individual plastic bottles. Choose to use the compostable cups along the route and at the finish line, or bring your own reusable bottle and let us fill it with World of Water or Nuun hydration!
Our Fit Expo does not use individual plastic bags for kits nor do we distribute samples or flyers in our kit bags. We invite you to visit with our exhibitors and take only what you need/can use from their samples.
